After nearly a decade of using makeup, award-winning singer and songwriter Alicia Keys finally decided to go makeup-free in 2016. Why, you ask? It’s simple. She became addicted to it. She shared this in an interview with Glamour UK magazine late last year.

“Makeup was a big thing for me; I had been wearing it since I was, like, 16 years old,” said Alicia. “And then, as I got into the music world, it was what you did every day to do your television or to do your shoot. So, I did it because I thought that’s what you’re supposed to do. And I realized I became addicted to it; I didn’t feel comfortable without it.”

The singer added that it got to the point that she solely became dependent on makeup to make her appear and feel confident.

What followed after that was a movement by celebrities referred to as the “no makeup” movement, which they followed to the letter even while appearing on the red carpet. Jeniffer Garner, Jeniffer Lawrence, and Heidi Klum were some of the celebrities who embraced this movement.

Fast forward, American actress and producer Shannen Doherty famed for her role in the hit drama series ‘Charmed’, is now advocating for women to start getting real with themselves.

“Watching movies tonight and noticed there were few female characters I could relate to. You know, women without fillers, without Botox, without a facelift. Women who embraced their face and all the experience it showed,” stated Shannen.

“I have lived. I love that I’ve lived and that my face reflects my life. I survived a lot, yes cancer but more than that I embrace me now. Finally. Done with the perception magazines and Hollywood try to make us in to. I want to see women like me. Women like us.”

The actress urged more women to embrace their natural beauty and not conform to anything that alters their appearance.

She said this while posing in a no-makeup selfie on Instagram as she called out Hollywood’s toxic beauty standards.
