Dar es Salaam. July 11, 2021. Davis & Shirtliff (D&S) Group, a supplier of water related equipment in Tanzania has handed over a self-propelled water facility to residents of Kimbiji ward in Kigamboni district, Dar es Salaam.
The Sh7 million water facility constructed by Davis & Shirtliff Group and Africabo Ltd serves more than 150 households of Kizito Wonjwa village and other nearby residents.
Africabo drilled the well, with a depth of 35 meters, while D&S installed an automatic pumping machine which uses solar energy to operate and a 300-meter tank.
Country director of D&S Mr Benjamin Munyao said, the installed machine helps the residents fetch water without using their hands to pump.
“The self-propelled machine has a capacity of pumping 500 liters to 1000 liters of water per hour. The solar system makes it easy for the facility to operate for 24 hours,” he said during the handing over ceremony which took place at Kizito Wonjwa village over the weekend.
He added “Over the 23 years of operations in Tanzania, we have been converging people, technology and resources to improve lives in the country through cooperation and a resolve to find sustainable solutions to existing challenges. Our goal is to achieve real impact on people, the communities they live in, the society and ultimately our planet to preserve it for future generations,”.
Sanata Omary (30), a mother of four who resides at Kizito Wonjwa village, used to wake up at 4am, leaving her husband and children in bed, just to get water from seasonal wells. Her efforts were sometimes fruitless as she went back home empty handed.
“Taking a bath was a very luxurious thing to us. Children had to just wash their face before going to school. I had to search for water during night hours. I couldn’t even enjoy my marriage,” she said.
She is smiling today because the access to clean and safe water is no longer a headache, thanks to D&S for constructing the water facility.
“We used to dig the well with our bare hands, so water was not clean and safe for drinking and cooking. We, however, did not have another choice. Eruption of diseases was a normal thing to us, particularly children,” she noted.
“Today, I and my family feel safe and secure. I can get water anytime now, so I spent much time on doing other economic activities and taking care of my family. My marriage is happy again,” she added.
The government thanked D&S and Africable companies for the construction of the facility.
Representing the Kigamboni District Commission, the Pemba Mnazi Division officer Mr Florence Msigwa asked the residents to protect and maintain the facility.
“Recently, at least six solar panels were stolen in different places in Kimbiji. I want you (residents) to guard and maintain the facility so that no one will steal the solar panels or destroy the facility,” he said.
